Grand Marais is actively pursuing initiatives to enhance infrastructure and promote environmental sustainability, aligning with the community’s long-term vision.
Recreation Area Master Plan Implementation
The city has secured a $1,066,560 grant from the Greater Minnesota Regional Parks and Trails Commission to fund the first phase of the Grand Marais Recreation Area Master Plan. This funding will support the development of recreational facilities and green spaces, aiming to improve residents’ quality of life and attract visitors.
Highway 61 Reconstruction Enhances Connectivity
The Minnesota Department of Transportation, in collaboration with the city, has completed a significant reconstruction of Highway 61 through Grand Marais. The project focused on updating infrastructure, improving pedestrian mobility and safety, and supporting tourism-related businesses along the corridor. Enhancements include better biking and pedestrian facilities and traffic calming measures to ensure a safer, more accessible environment for all.
Commitment to Environmental Sustainability
In response to climate change concerns, Grand Marais adopted a Climate Action Plan in 2018. The plan sets ambitious goals, including achieving carbon neutrality by 2040. Strategies involve reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting renewable energy sources, reflecting the community’s dedication to environmental stewardship.
These initiatives demonstrate Grand Marais’ proactive approach to fostering a vibrant, sustainable community that honors its unique character and natural surroundings.
